A social network – the new meeting place. It used to be a church social or the dreaded blind date. Then it was the nightclub or your local favorite bar, but the new meeting place is in an unlikely place. It is the type of place that you can go to in your pajamas with bed head hair. You can wear the holey t-shirt and be eating Chinese from a takeout box. It is the type of place where you can be comfortable with who you are because you don’t have to be who you say you are. Social networking is a meeting place on the Internet where you can meet people from all over the world or right next door. It is a place where you can talk to people for hours or minutes, you can be yourself and let you hair down or you can decide to be someone completely different. There are many different names for social networks across the internet from MySpace to multiple blogs across the web.

The next step that the social network looks to be taking is toward video. This means instead of wearing your pajamas or holey shirt to sit in front of the computer you will get cleaned up and look presentable before you head over to the computer and make small talk with “virtual” strangers. You won’t have to worry that the person said they are gorgeous and look like your Uncle Fred after open heart surgery. The only thing you will have to worry about is if they are telling you the truth, are they really Charlie instead of Charlene or do they really work for the city or not work at all. Video social networking will take part of the guessing game out of meeting people online but you will still have the blind date feel without the worry of meeting them in person unless you decide to pursue the relationship.

Bringing video to social networking sites also opens up a new advertising field. Instead of using video only on television and movies, the corporate world will also be able to start utilizing the vast demographics of the Internet. An advertising campaign can be televised during prime time and on select websites and in select areas. If you have a website that is focused on a specific area and a television channel is bringing one of their top chefs to that town to broadcast their show, the company can broadcast their video advertisement on the city site instead of paying to advertise across the whole country.

Companies will save money by direct marketing instead of using broad marketing to target their audience. As more companies start to realize the potential of this type of advertising the customer base for the local search will increase. Companies will be able to market to a specific demographic base to pinpoint the type of advertising they would like to use. Streaming video advertising is growing at a lightning speed and local search has the opportunity to become a major benefactor in its growth. If it decides to tap into the potential of video marketing then local search has the potential to see their customer base exceed exponentially.
